Bhaatkhande Sangit Vidyalaya (BSV), affiliated to the Bhaatkhande Sangeet Vidyapith, Lucknow; a premier music university of India, is the teaching center of the Hindi Sangeet Institution.

Hindi Sangeet Institution, a cultural organisation dedicated to showcasing and celebrating Indian Classical music, was founded over 80 years ago on August 4, 1939 in Rangoon, Burma. The idea was to promote Indian Classical Music among the local Indian residents. This was the dream of the founder, Late Shri. N.N. Chopra, an accomplished musician who had devoted his life to the cause of Indian Classical Music. Shri Chopra’s commitment to musicology has endowed the Vidyalaya with some valuable gems, which include his thesis on ‘Construction of Indian Ragas’, and his to conceptualization of the unique form of ‘sound and ear’ voice training – which are used in our training methodology even today. Many of his books and compositions also remain an integral part of the training process.

With the onset of World War II, the bulk of the institute had to be moved to India in 1942, leaving behind a skeleton of sorts which continued to function in Rangoon. On February 8, 1947 the Institute formally brought down the curtains on the first chapter with a Musical Variety Program at Rama Krishna Hall, in Rangoon. Along with all the people displaced by the war, the Institute too faced its share of difficulties in the effort to regrow roots in India. The next chapter began in New Delhi with the 9th Anniversary Celebrations at Massey Hall (YMCA) on September 12, 1948. The first program in India was a show in aid of Royal Indian Navy personnel at the YMCA Hall on November 21, 1948. The Silver Jubilee was celebrated on October 31, 1964 at Sapru House, New Delhi.

Sharing the story of all migrant people from those times, the Institution also struggled initially. The years of hard work finally paid off, when the Government of India granted us land to construct our premises in 1990. Today, the Institution has its teaching centre, BSV, located at B-6 Qutub Institutional Area, New Delhi. BSV is an established examination center of the Bhaatkhande Sangeet Vidyapith, Lucknow and thousands of students have graduated from the Vidyalaya since 1960 with Sangeet Visharad (5-year degree course in Music) degrees. In addition to the music education program, the Vidyalaya also holds music concerts and festivals to enrich the cultural life of the capital.

My daughter, Gauri, loves to come here. As a child, I see her inclined to music. She seems to be always singing one or the other thing. At the age of 5, her favourite pastime is to dance along with singing. Even when she is with her friends, in the mid intervals she could be seen singing and dancing.

We have been associated with the Vidyalaya for the last 10 yrs. We have witnessed sincere Efforts made by the Vidyalaya to promote our cultural heritage of classical music and dance in young children. It’s a great feet that children from the age group as young as four join and teachers are able to keep them motivated and interested. This couldn’t be achieved without dedication.
